Hwange National Park is the largest national park in Zimbabwe, covering approximately 14,650 square kilometres in the country’s northwest, just over an hour’s drive south of Victoria Falls. Known for its vast, untouched wilderness and rich biodiversity, the park is home to over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 bird species. It is particularly famous for its large elephant population and is one of the last strongholds for endangered African wild dogs.
The landscape is a mix of open savannah, teak forests and mopane woodlands, offering varied habitats for a wide range of wildlife. Guests can spot four of the Big Five: elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo, as well as rarer animals like sable and roan antelope. The dry season from July to late October is the best time for game viewing, as animals congregate at water sources..
Hwange offers an authentic, crowd-free safari experience with a variety of accommodation options, from luxury lodges to intimate bush camps. It is a perfect destination for wildlife lovers, birdwatchers, photographers and anyone seeking an off-the-beaten-path African adventure.
