Tofo is a small beach town located on the southeastern coast of Mozambique, about 22 kilometres east of Inhambane. Tofo has a vibrant barefoot vibe to it with numerous backpacker spots, affordable restaurants and plenty of beach bars.
It is easily accessible via the Inhambane Airport, which is serviced by regular flights from Johannesburg, South Africa, and Maputo, Mozambique. A traveller with an adventurous spirit can get to Tofo Beach by road which is just 30 kilometres from Inhambane Airport. Or the better part, a 7 hours drive from Maputo, appreciating the pretty scenery along the way!
It is much cheaper than some of the islands and so can be a great introduction to Mozambique’s marine life without the hefty price tag.
In season you can see the ‘Big 5’ of the marine world! Whale sharks, giant & reef mantas, turtles, dolphins & humpback whale all visit Tofo’s rich and diverse waters and are guaranteed to be found between June and October – the humpback whales in particular can be found in huge numbers during this time, scattered across the bay and close to shore. You can also find leopard sharks, the rare small-eye sting ray and of course plenty of luminous fish.
Tofo is known for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, and abundant marine life, making it a popular destination for snorkelling, diving, and fishing. Most of the better dive sites require you to have deep dive certification which you can complete there, but getting to and from the dive sites can be a little rough which makes it better suited for someone looking for adventure rather than peace and quiet.
The town also offers a range of other activities, such as surfing, kiteboarding, horse riding, and beach volleyball. In addition, visitors can explore the nearby Inhambane city and its historic architecture, markets, and museums.
Tofo is situated in the heart of the Tsonga culture, which is characterized by vibrant music, dance, and storytelling traditions. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture by attending cultural events, visiting traditional villages, and interacting with the friendly locals.
In addition, there are cultural tours that can be arranged during the stay. Visitors go into the village and appreciate the culture by being part of the local food cooking process and at the end share the meal with the hosting family.
A laid-back vibe and party atmosphere makes Tofo a great place for younger travellers or those looking to make friends on their travels.
