Best known for its excellent diving, beautiful stretches of beaches. It is much cheaper than some of the islands and so can be a great introduction to Mozambique’s marine life without the hefty price tag. Tofo has a vibrant barefoot vibe to it with numerous backpacker spots, affordable restaurants and plenty of beach bars.
In season you can see the ‘Big 5’ of the marine world! Whale sharks, giant & reef mantas, turtles, dolphins & humpback whale all visit Tofo’s rich and diverse waters and are guaranteed to be found between June and October – the humpback whales in particular can be found in huge numbers during this time, scattered across the bay and close to shore. You can also find leopard sharks, the rare small-eye sting ray and of course plenty of luminous fish.
Scuba diving would be considered the number one activity in Tofo. Most of the better dive sites require you to have deep dive certification which you can complete there, but getting to and from the dive sites can be a little rough which makes it better suited for someone looking for adventure rather than peace and quiet!
A laid-back vibe and party atmosphere makes Tofo a great place for younger travellers or those looking to make friends on their travels.
