Getting to Benguerra Island

To get to the Bazaruto Archipelago, you can fly from Johannesburg to Vilanculos, which takes about two hours. LAM and Federal Air offer flights to Vilanculos, with some flights stopping in Nelspruit to pick up passengers. There are also flights from Maputo to Vilanculos. Once you’re there, you won’t need a car on the island, but the hotels have 4x4s for safari trips. Resorts typically provide wooden dhonis, speedboats, and 4x4s for transportation around the area.
