Malawi Tours FAQs

How much is a safari in Malawi?

Safaris in Malawi can range from around $100–$300 USD per person per day depending on accommodation style and included activities. Budget trips typically start from around $300 per day, mid-range lodge safaris average around $500 per day, and high-end luxury safaris can be $1,000+ per day.

Is Malawi good for safari?

Yes. Malawi offers excellent safari experiences in reserves such as Liwonde National Park, Majete Wildlife Reserve, and Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. Wildlife includes elephants, hippos, antelope, leopards, lions, monkeys, crocodiles, and 400+ bird species. Parks are often less crowded than in more well-known safari countries, which can make the experience feel more exclusive.

What is the best time to visit Malawi?

For safari, the dry season from May to October (often into mid-November) is typically best. Wildlife gathers around water sources and vegetation is thinner, making animals easier to spot. The rainy season (mid-November to April) can bring heavy downpours and limit some activities, but it’s also greener, often better value, and you may see newborn animals.

Can you see the big five in Malawi?

Yes — Majete Wildlife Reserve is a key place to look for the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino, and lion). Many itineraries include Majete for travellers hoping to see these species in the wild.
