Victoria Falls & Livingstone

Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya – “The Smoke that Thunders” – is one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, straddling the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. While the mighty Zambezi River plunges into the Batoka Gorge to create this thundering spectacle, travellers can experience it from both sides: the Zimbabwean town of Victoria Falls and Zambia’s Livingstone. Each offers a unique perspective, from panoramic viewpoints and rainforest trails on the Zimbabwe side to thrilling adventures like Devil’s Pool and microlight flights from Livingstone. Whether seeking adrenaline, photography, romance, or to marvel at one of Africa’s most significant landmarks, Victoria Falls promises an unforgettable experience.

Things to do in Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and one of the greatest attractions in Africa, offers awe-inspiring views and unique attractions such as the Boiling Pot and Devil’s Pool. There is so much to do at the falls, you will need to visit at least twice. Activities include boat tours, white water rafting, bungee jump, kayaking, helicopter rides, micro-lighting, and swim in Devil’s Pool (from mid-August to mid-January).
If you don’t fancy any high-octane activities, you can drive through the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park which is situated along the upper Zambezi River. It includes the Victoria Falls and stretches for about 12 kilometres up the Zambezi River above the falls. Although the park is small, only 66 square kilometres, it is home to a wide variety of species including, antelope, zebra, giraffe, elephants and warthog.

1. Bungee Jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge
Take the leap from 111 metres above the Zambezi River — with the iconic falls as your backdrop. This is one of the world’s highest and most scenic bungee jumps, and a true bucket-list challenge for thrill-seekers.

2. Swim in Devil’s Pool (Zambia side, dry season only)
Perched at the very edge of the falls, Devil’s Pool offers the ultimate natural infinity pool experience. Accessible only during the dry season (typically August to December), this is one of the most daring and memorable ways to get up close to the edge of Victoria Falls.

3. Helicopter or Microlight “Flight of Angels”
Soar above the falls and surrounding gorge for breathtaking aerial views that truly showcase the scale and beauty of the landscape. Helicopter flights offer a smooth, cinematic experience, while microlight flights provide a more open-air, adrenaline-filled adventure.

4. White-Water Rafting on the Zambezi River
Just downstream from the falls lies one of the best white-water rafting stretches in the world. Navigate Grade IV and V rapids with expert guides — an intense and thrilling way to experience the river’s power.

5. Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi River
For a more relaxed experience, drift along the upper Zambezi on a luxury sunset cruise. Enjoy drinks and snacks while watching hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and birdlife, all silhouetted against a golden African sunset.

Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons, and knowing when to go can make all the difference. The Zambezi River feeds the falls, which rise in Angola and flow through Zambia and Zimbabwe. This means there’s a delay between the rainy season and the peak water flow at the falls.

High-Water Season (March to May)

This is the time to go if you’re after raw power and thunder. The Zambezi is in full flow, and Victoria Falls becomes a wall of water — loud, misty, and awe-inspiring. The spray rises to 400 metres and can be seen from miles away, earning the name Mosi-oa-Tunya – “The Smoke that Thunders”.

Best for: Feeling the full force of the falls, helicopter flights, and dramatic photographs.
Be prepared to get soaked, especially from the Knife-Edge Bridge and other viewing platforms. Thick mist may obscure some viewpoints.

Dry Season & Best Visibility (June to August)

This is the sweet spot for most travellers. Water levels begin to drop slightly, but the falls are still impressive and much easier to see, without heavy spray. It’s also the best time to combine your visit with safaris in Zambia, Zimbabwe, or nearby Chobe National Park in Botswana, where dry conditions concentrate wildlife near water sources.

Best for: Clear views, good photography, pleasant weather, safari extensions.
Temperatures are cooler, and the skies are mostly clear – ideal for exploring on foot or by boat.

Low-Water Season (September to November)

During this period, water levels are at their lowest, especially on the Zambian side, where some sections of the falls may dry up completely. However, this unveils the rock face behind the falls, which is hidden during high-water months, offering a unique perspective on the geological forces that shaped this wonder.

Best for: Swimming in Devil’s Pool, seeing the rock formations, adrenaline activities like rafting and gorge hiking.
The Zimbabwe side retains more flow and is often recommended during this time for those who want to see cascading water still.

Rainy Season (December to February)

The rains return to the region, and the Zambezi rises again, though it takes time to reach peak levels at the falls. The landscape becomes lush and green, with warm, often humid conditions and occasional afternoon downpours.

Best for: Fewer tourists, beautiful greenery, good travel deals.
Water levels are still building, so while the falls may not yet be at their full power, the spray starts to return.
