Camelthorn Lodge offers a unique and unforgettable experience, tucked away in the peaceful Acacia Forests that border Hwange National Park. Unlike typical safari camps, it blends the charm of a Spanish villa with the rugged beauty of the African bush, creating an atmosphere all its own. It stands as a refreshing departure from traditional safari accommodations, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a truly distinctive environment.

Exceptional Location

Set on the southeastern edge of Hwange National Park, Camelthorn Lodge is surrounded by untouched Camelthorn Acacia forests, offering guests a genuine connection to Africa’s wild landscape. The lodge is just a short drive from the Ngamo Plains, a renowned wildlife haven. Famous for its vast elephant populations, the plains also support an array of game, including buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and predators like lion and cheetah. During the rainy season, the area transforms into a birdwatcher’s paradise, as the plains turn into a vast shallow lake teeming with avian life.

Unique Activities

Camelthorn Lodge offers an exciting variety of activities to suit every type of safari enthusiast. Guests can embark on thrilling game drives, walking safaris, and night safaris led by expert guides with intimate knowledge of the area. For something more unique, visitors can participate in the ‘Village Visit’ to gain insight into the lives of local communities and discover Camelthorn’s contributions. The ‘Pump Run’ is another highlight, allowing guests to assist in delivering fuel to vital water pumps, supporting conservation efforts for Hwange’s wildlife. For an up-close experience, the Stoffies hide provides a rare chance to observe elephants from a few meters away, offering an unforgettable wildlife encounter.

Accommodation

Camelthorn Lodge features eight spacious villas designed to complement the surrounding forest. Each villa is elegantly furnished and equipped with an en-suite bathroom, ensuring maximum comfort in both the summer heat and winter chill. The main lodge area centres around a majestic ancient Camelthorn tree, a natural focal point of the property. The dining area offers expansive views, with large glass doors that can be closed during the cooler months, providing a warm and inviting space. The lodge’s tranquil setting, nestled within a lush acacia grove, guarantees an exclusive and serene escape.

  • Wonderful Experience

“This is a non tent lodge – all solid build cottages. The accommodation was very clean and large nice cottages. The guide/rangers are very knowledgeable and engaging. Lots of Elephants and lions. The staff were great and so was the food. This is owned by Imvelo Group which are working to protect the rhinos and developing the village nearby with education and hiring local.”

  • Really loved the staff!

“Beautiful rooms and outstanding staff. Really nice tub/shower with good water pressure. Lots of great food, including a picnic lunch at the lookup blind, where you can watch elephants at close range. There’s an extra charge to see the rhinos ($100/person) which isn’t so much, especially since it goes toward conservation, but we didn’t know in advance. The “Elephant Express” train ride to and from is long, bumpy and not that interesting, but a small price for a great safari experience. Would definitely recommend!”
