Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park in Western Zimbabwe is the largest natural reserve in Zimbabwe and the third largest in Africa. With an area of 14,600km², its sheer size means that its scenery, vegetation and game vary hugely, ranging from the semi-desert scrub on the edge of the Kalahari in the south to forests, granite hills and valleys of mopane woodlands in the north.

It is home to the Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – as well as over 400 species of birds, abundant plains game and an array of mammals. As you can see from the photos below, there is an abundance of elephant in the park – around 44,000 – which makes it one of the largest elephant populations in the world.
Hwange is one of the few places in Zimbabwe to see giraffe. All the unusual antelope are resident and spotted quite easily, including greater kudu, gemsbok, sable and roan antelope. The population of wild dogs is one of the largest in Africa.

And the camps themselves are world-class… Discover them below.

Where to stay in Hwange National Park

Sable Sands Safari Lodge

Set in a unique location, Konkamoya sits on the wildlife rich shores of the Itezhi-Tezhi Lake. Being the only lodge on the lake you enjoy an intimate and exclusive safari experience.

Ivory Lodge

Ivory Lodge is situated in the Sikumi Forest Reserve which is a strip of protected land that sits between Vic Falls and Hwange National Park. The lodge itself is fenced which is unusual but it does keep the larger animals out so it’s a great spot for families with small children.

Somalisa Camp

If you are looking for peace and quiet but thrive off adventure then Somalisa Camp is exactly where you will get the best of both worlds. The national park offers so much excitement around every corner and you will be blown away with the sightings, as well as the contrast of the forest and the open plains around.

Somalisa Acacia

Somalisa Acacia is the sister property to Somalisa Camp, and although the two are very similar in style, they are run separately. Somalisa Acacia is perfect for families, especially those with young children.

Somalisa Expeditions

Somalisa Expeditions has an incredibly relaxed and back-to-basics safari feel. Unlike its luxurious sister camps, it offers a traditional safari experience and a far more intimate bush camp feel.

Verneys Camp, Machaba Safaris

Verney's camp is situated in a private concession in the heart of Hwange National Park, sitting on a large open floodplain surrounded by forest, a gorgeous location alone.

Camp Hwange

When staying at Camp Hwange, you get a distinct bush feel, which adds to the incredible experience of being in the wilderness. The camp itself has a very rustic feel but is very comfortable, offering a huge emphasis on the safari experience.

Hwange Bush Camp

Hwange Bush Camp is situated in the Robins area of the park. Overlooking the Dolilo Vlei and nearby Dolilo pan, the 6 meru style tents are tastefully decorated, each with their own private en-suite bathroom with skylight roof tops.
