Fam Trip: Crafted Africa Team visit Liwonde & Lake Malawi

Ready for adventure? Take a break with us and make your way to Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa! As a tour operator made up of seasoned explorers, we’re as excited as ever to explore this beautiful and diverse land, full of incredible lakes and wildlife.

We always make sure to take a few days to immerse ourselves in each destination we sell, that way we are always up-to-date and we can provide our guests and partners with the most accurate and useful information.  Now, pack your bags, and let’s embark on this one-of-a-kind adventure to Southern Malawi.

Liwonde National Park

Our adventure commenced with an exhilarating mission, to explore all the lodges and camps within the breathtaking Liwonde National Park. Our itinerary included visiting Mvuu Lodge, Mvuu Camp, and Kuthengo Camp, and we successfully accomplished this feat.

There are 3 main ways to get to these lodges:

  1. Through the main gate. This is a great option for those arriving from Blantyre since the way goes directly through the park and to the lodges.

  2. A boat transfer at Charlie Charlie pick-up point. Here the lodge’s very informative representative will amaze you with interesting facts and tips as you cruise on to the lodge.

  3. If you feel like avoiding long drives, then you always have the option to fly into Liwonde National Park’s Airstrip.

Kuthengo Camp

Our first stop at Liwonde National Park was Kuthengo Camp. We arrived on the boat transfer and timed it perfectly as we encountered some breathtaking animal sightings along the riverbanks. We were lucky enough to spot elephants, antelopes, and kudus. However, the highlight of our wildlife encounters came in the form of a magnificent pod of hippos feeding along the riverbank. While our guide informed us that such sightings are relatively common, the spectacle of observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was truly awe-inspiring.

Upon arriving, Mike, our wonderful host at the camp welcomed us with open arms and gave us a memorable tour of the camp. Kuthengo Camp is an absolute beauty, with its breathtaking view of the river, its five air-conditioned ensuite chalets, and its safari-style decor that makes you feel right at home. In addition, the camp boasts an incredible pool, a stunning dining area, an impressive bar, and a comfortable lounge, all strategically positioned to offer guests a panoramic view of the river. This unique setup allows guests to enjoy the perfect game-sighting experience right from the camp itself, immersing them in the beauty of the surroundings while indulging in the camp’s amenities.

To top it all off, the culinary experience at Kuthengo Safari Camp is an absolute delight. The camp’s talented in-house chef prepares mouth-watering dishes that elevate the already thrilling adventure experience. So, if you are a lover of wildlife, adventure, breathtaking scenery, and delectable cuisine, make your way to Kuthengo Camp. We guarantee that the combination of these exceptional elements will leave you thoroughly satisfied and impressed.

Mvuu Lodge

After our farewell lunch at Kuthengo, it was time to head to Mvuu Camp where we would spend the night. As a last surprise, Mike generously upgraded our regular boat transfer to a river safari, a special treat that we simply couldn’t turn down. We were so impressed by the incredible wildlife we saw. From the serene and gentle elephants and antelopes to the cunning crocodiles and the occasionally irritable hippos, the diversity of animal sightings left an enduring mark on each of us. The experience was filled with excitement and a deep appreciation for the wonders that Malawi has to offer.

To our delightful surprise, our spirits were about to be lifted even higher, all thanks to the incredible generosity of Pam, the owner of Caws. She kindly offered us an unexpected upgrade, allowing us to indulge in the comforts of Mvuu Lodge instead of Mvuu Camp. This unexpected turn of gave us the opportunity to embrace and enjoy the more opulent Mvuu Lodge. We were truly grateful for Pam’s kindness, and this kind offer added an extra layer of splendour to our journey, and we are only 1 day into it.

We eagerly headed to our chalets, which were simply stunning. Each one had an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub and an outdoor shower. It was here that one of our Crafted Africa staff members got struck with some luck of the bush, a visit from a few waterbuck, whilst taking a shower. That’s what we love about the bush, you never know what is lurking around the corner.

Our game drive in Liwonde National Park proved to be an exhilarating adventure. With our knowledgeable guide, David, leading the way, we were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The sight of majestic lions and their playful cubs left us in awe, capturing the essence of the wild in its purest form. As we continued our journey, we encountered a charming herd of zebras, accompanied by two adorable foals. David shared an interesting side note too, revealing that during the rainy season, zebras tend to vanish, their whereabouts remaining a mystery, even to him.

The Shire River proved to be an ideal location for animal sightings during the dry season. We observed a multitude of animals congregating near the riverbank. The abundance of wildlife in this area provided us with incredible opportunities to witness the wonders of nature up close. Liwonde National Park truly delivered a captivating and unforgettable game drive experience to us all.

Lake Malawi

After our wonderful adventure in Liwonde National Park, it was time for us to venture off to Lake Malawi, starting off our visit to The Makokola Retreat.

Makokola Retreat

If location is everything, then Makokola is at the top of the list. Perfectly situated on the palm-fringed southern shore of the lake, Makokola’s beauty is almost unparalleled. In addition, the rooms offer a range of luxurious options that are sure to please all types of travellers. While Makakola Retreat is the perfect escape for any traveller visiting Malawi, it is important to note that it can be quite popular on weekends, attracting a larger number of visitors. This popularity may result in a bustling and lively atmosphere, which may not be ideal for those seeking a tranquil and peaceful escape. However, if you’re a thrill-seeker and enjoy the energy of a vibrant location as well as several activities, including a golf course, trips to the islands and an abundance of water sports, then it is the perfect spot for you.

Located just a short 45-minute boat ride from the mainland, Mumbo Island provides a unique experience that sets it apart from other lodges.
