Malawi, Malawi? What is it? Where is it? If you’re planning your next holiday in the Warm Heart of Africa you will (almost) certainly face these questions. And if you landed on our website by pure chance… stay! We’re going to tell you more about this little country of South-eastern Africa that remains quite unknown and mysterious but has a lot to offer!
So, Malawi. You’ll find it in the right-hand corner of Africa. Not so southern, yes, here. Do you see the big blue marker? This is Malawi. Yes, it looks tiny on the map, but once you visit you’ll understand why it is BIG. Beautiful, Incredible and Grand! Beautiful for its wildlife, incredible for its people and grand for its always changing landscapes and lake!
This little country is a democracy and one of the most densely populated countries in Africa with 194 inhabitants per km2 when the average is 42 on the continent! Don’t panic you’ll find privacy and calm on the islands and in the reserves as they’ve escaped mass tourism, and these people will always try their best to make you feel at home!
Malawi is often called the Warm Heart of Africa for the kindness of its people, it has even been selected as one of the kindest countries to strangers in the world! This small landlocked country is one of the safest places in Africa and besides the welcoming Malawians, you will be astonished at how much such a small country has to offer!
Malawi, in Chichewa – the local language – means flames or fire. It is named after the incredible sunset and sunrises over Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi is one of the main attractions of the country! The 3rd biggest lake in Africa world-renowned for its crystal-clear waters but also because it displays the highest number of fish species of any lake in the world!
More than just the lake, Malawi’s national parks & reserves are stunning and less explored! This means that you’ll discover untouched landscapes and enjoy privacy while on safari. Most of these reserves and national parks were destroyed by poaching but thanks to African Parks Malawi is in the middle of rebuilding its natural heritage, for your pleasure.
Malawi offers a stunning variety of landscapes! Situated just at the end of the Great Rift, Malawi is a mix of beaches, plateaus, mountains, forests, rivers and tea plantations. A delight for the eyes, a paradise for photographers, adventurers and travellers in general as you can find everything in the Warm Heart of Africa!
People come to Malawi for multiple reasons: lake, wildlife, landscapes but also hiking! Because yes, this very small country also offers awesome hiking opportunities! Like a plateau? Head to Nyika – where you’ll have the feeling to be in Scotland with zebra around you – or Zomba! Looking for a more challenging experience? Mount Mulanje and Sapitwa peak should satisfy your need for summits and adrenaline! Sapitwa is Malawi’s highest mountain and Central Africa’s highest point, not quite reaching the heights of Kilimanjaro but a good start.
Finally, Malawi’s climate is ideal during the European/American summer! From June to August temperatures drop but are still nice at the lake, and there is no rain, the dry climate makes it a lot easier to spot animals! September to November is dry and gets very hot, in December rains start and continues until February. This nourishes the soil for a lush green season from March till May! We’ll be very happy to help you to pick the right season depending on your requirements!
