Golf

Here is something different to enjoy that most places don’t offer. Their 9-hole golf course is situated in a beautiful setting, somewhat challenging too with all the baobabs around the course. Whether you are a keen golfer or just trying out, it’s a fun way to see some more of the gorgeous landscape and enjoy the beauty of the birdlife around.

Conservation & the Community

The Makokola Retreat has always ensured to make the local community contributors, and, over the years the retreat has strengthened the long-term commitment to the community. Local villages have been trained to help build the lodge itself, women thatch the roofs and some of the furnishings have been locally handmade – you look around the retreat and admire the touches around. When it comes to the food, they grow their own fresh produce or use the local fishermen nearby for the delicious fish dishes the chef creates – fresh every day!

  • Beautiful place to relax

This is a beautiful, quiet and immaculately maintained lakeside resort, perfect to relax in luxury for a few days. There are great views over the lake and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the spectacular sunsets. We (family of 4 including daughters aged 17 and 21) arrived by small plane at the resort’s private airstrip and received a very warm welcome. Everyone at Makokola was extremely friendly and helpful and went out of their way to ensure we got the most out of our visit. Special thanks to Nick and Greg for arranging the activities – would highly recommend the speedboat trip to the nearby island to feed the fish and birds and see other wildlife, including the local croc!

  • Could not have asked for more

My colleagues and I were visiting Nkopola for a multiple month trip and I can confidently say that our best discovery was the Makokola. The owner and staff welcomed us with open arms and did everything imaginable to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. We had the freedom of choosing any location on Lake Malawi, and by the time we ended up there, we were at our home away from home. The food, rooms, and quality of service, specifically attended to by the owner, make the Makokola a place that not only will we return to, but we will be recommending to anyone wishing for a first class experience. Don’t think twice, because there is nothing better on Lake Malawi.
