Yes, Malawi is generally a peaceful and friendly country to visit. Most travellers experience nothing but kindness, curiosity, and warm hospitality. Violent crime is rare, especially in tourist areas. That said, petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching can occur in busy markets or city centres, so it’s best to remain alert and keep valuables out of sight.

Avoid walking alone at night in urban areas, and always take official taxis or transfers arranged by your accommodation or tour operator.

Where is Malawi?

Nestled in southeast Africa and bordered by Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, Malawi is a favourite among both backpackers and seasoned travellers. Visitors are drawn to the vast, shimmering Lake Malawi — the third-largest lake in Africa — and the country’s emerging wildlife experiences, including the opportunity to see the Big Five in Majete Wildlife Reserve. However, perhaps the most compelling reason to visit is Malawi’s reputation as the “Warm Heart of Africa.” Its people are famously friendly and welcoming, making it one of the safest and most inviting destinations on the continent.

Malawi has been a multi-party democracy since 1994, with minimal political unrest in recent years. The low threat level from terrorism sets it apart from other regions.

Unlike many other nations, Malawians haven’t fought amongst themselves: the country has never had a civil war.

Despite its economic challenges, Malawi boasts a low crime rate. Travellers should take precautions, particularly in major cities such as Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Limbe.

Transport & Road Safety

Driving in Malawi is on the left side of the road, and road conditions can vary significantly. Main routes between cities are generally good, but rural roads may be unpaved or poorly maintained.

Travel tips:

• Avoid driving at night due to the risk of potholes, unlit vehicles, and stray animals.

• Fuel shortages can occur, especially in remote areas. If self-driving, keep your tank topped up.

• Minibuses are widely used by locals but are often overcrowded and poorly maintained. We recommend using private transfers, trusted car hire, or travelling with a reputable tour company (like us!).

• Same-sex relationships are legal but not widely accepted in all parts of the country. We recommend discretion for LGBTQ+ travellers in public spaces.

Visitors should consult their doctors 8-10 weeks before travelling to Malawi for immunizations against various diseases. HIV/AIDS and malaria are prevalent, so appropriate precautions are essential.

Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia)

Schistosomiasis is found in freshwater in Malawi. Even if you swim in certain parts of the lake, consider taking the recommended medication upon returning home for peace of mind.

Healthcare Facilities

According to the World Health Organisation’s report, Malawi’s health system ranks 185th out of 190. It is impossible to comment on the quality of clinics and hospitals throughout Malawi; however, I recently visited a clinic for the first time and was seen very promptly after registering and having a quick check of my weight and blood pressure. Following my diagnosis, I was placed on a course of antibiotics, and five days later, my symptoms had gone.
