Discover The Makokola Retreat

A Romantic Retreat to Makokola

Saturdays are for sleeping many would say, but if you’re me they’re for early rises, and what better reason to get up early than a road trip, to our stunning Lake Malawi. Me being the person I am I had my bags packed the day before, yup I said bags, for a one-night trip, you could never be too prepared, to be fair it was just my duffel bag and my handbag. So off we went, down Dedza escarpment, where you get a first glimpse of magical lake Malawi building our excitement.

A pleasant 3 hours’ drive had us arriving at The Makokola Retreat, set in the stunning beaches of Mangochi in the southern part of Malawi. The Makokola retreat, is a superb resort, warm with hospitality, excellent service, great facilities and scrumptious food. It is perfect for families but also couples, especially with their new lake suites extension.

A private pool for two

We had the unique opportunity to stay in the Sunset Lake Villa and it is quite the experience. The 2-story villa with private pool, large plasma screen, several air-conditioning units and mini-fridge was lush and luxurious indeed. As our porter was showing us around the room, all we could do was “ooh and ahhh” at just how incredible everything in the villa was, the highlight being the private pool. It took everything we had in us to leave the enticing pool for later and head back out to have our lunch, which again was a treat and very welcome as we were starving by now.

Following our delightful lunch of oh so delicious chicken quesadillas, that we wolfed down, one partly because we were hungry and two because we wanted to head back to the villa for a dip in the pool, we rushed right back and within 10 minutes of leaving the table were cooling off in our larger than life private pool. The rest of the afternoon saw us swimming, taking walks along the beach and having sundowners at lake suites private bar. Being a couple there on a little break we appreciated the Sunset Villa and Lake suites area having an adult only restriction, allowing for peace and serenity to reign. 😃

Tennis under the stars!

As night fell we ended up watching a little tv before heading out into the starry night, this time for a little tennis match, which by the way I have never played, and saw Ian wiping the floor with my butt. We only had to request at the reception for the floodlights on the court to be turned on and rackets and balls to provided which they obliged ever so wonderfully, it was so kind of them. After me being completely annihilated at a somewhat game of tennis we headed over for dinner. It was a lovely night to say the least and a couple celebrating their 30th anniversary came over to every table including ours to share some cake (which meant two desserts so yippee for me) which was so kind of them.

As the night grew late we soon had to return to the villa for a good night’s rest, which is exactly what we had, leaving in the morning would be hard, and was hard, but we had to, so leave we did, back to our normal lives retuning to the  hustle and bustle of our Lilongwe.

The Makokola Retreat is a fantastic getaway destination for all not just lovers escaping Lilongwe for the weekend. If you would like to visit contact us today.
