Our journey commenced from Lilongwe at approximately 8 AM, aiming for the Mwami border. We reached the border around 11 AM and made our departure at 12:30 PM after switching vehicles and being greeted by a Crafted Africa partner on the Zambian side.
The ride from the border to our meeting point with Mwila, our driver-guide from Tafika Camp, took about three hours. He expertly guided us from the vibrant tribal textiles site directly to the park for an exhilarating game drive. Afterwards, we arrived at Tafika Camp, where Jen warmly welcomed us, showed us to our rooms, and later joined us for a delightful dinner, sharing stories of our adventures in the African wilderness.
The following morning, we had an early start at 5 AM, setting off for a game drive by 5:30 AM. It was very cold and afterwards, we were transported to Tena Tena Camp, where we were greeted by Bessie and enjoyed a lovely lunch together. We took some time to relax before embarking on an exciting afternoon and evening game drive. During this adventure, we were fortunate enough to witness a leopard and her cub feasting on a kill. Dinner followed with the other guests at the camp, after which we caught up on emails and settled in for the night.
After a good night’s sleep, we had breakfast and boarded a boat from Tena Tena Camp across the Luangwa River, where Perry awaited us for a brief game drive before we continued to Shawa Luangwa Camp. It was a pleasure to see Perry again as he had been our guide during our previous visit to Nkwali. Throughout this trip, we encountered many familiar faces, which added to the joy.
Upon our arrival at Shawa Luangwa Camp, we were met with enthusiastic singing and dancing from the entire team. We joined in with a few moves of our own, creating a fun atmosphere. After introductions, we were escorted to our airy tent that boasted beautiful views of the Luangwa, immersing us in the natural surroundings.
We enjoyed a scrumptious lunch, explored the camp, and then joined ‘Jack Sparrow’ for a game drive. Riding an electric vehicle was a unique experience, allowing us to get up close and personal with wildlife. Great for birding too! After dinner, we engaged in delightful conversation before retreating to our cosy beds, and before we knew it, the time came to bid farewell to the team and continue to our next lodge.
As we drew near to Luwi, we were greeted with open arms by the wonderful Lawrence and his team. The enchanting atmosphere of the bush camp wrapped around us like a warm hug! The food was absolutely mouthwatering, the staff were delightfully friendly, and the scenery was simply breathtaking! Though our stay at Luwi was short, we squeezed every last drop of joy out of our time there before heading off for an afternoon game drive that doubled as our transfer to our next exciting adventure: the extraordinary Luwi Sleepout!
Excitement mingled with a hint of fear as we arrived to enjoy refreshments amidst the gentle evening breeze. The reality of sleeping under the stars on the sandy banks of the Luwi River filled us with anticipation, accentuated by the soothing symphony of nature surrounding us. It was a magical night! Lawrence and the Sleepout crew took excellent care of us, ensuring our safety as we savoured a delightful dinner beneath the vast sky. As dawn broke, Lawrence excitedly shared that wild dogs had passed by just moments before we woke!
After breakfast, we embarked on a walking safari with Lawrence and Ranger Peter towards Nsolo. Honestly, walking safaris deserve more recognition! We gained a wealth of knowledge and discovered the intricate connections of the bush in ways we could truly appreciate. The 4.5-kilometre trek felt swift, and soon we were welcomed by cheers from the Nsolo team, led by Julius, who greeted us with warm hospitality.
Our time at Nsolo was devoted to relaxation. Julius and his team made us feel right at home as we prepared for an extensive 14-kilometre walk to Kakuli the following day. The views at Nsolo were stunning, featuring spacious rooms and a veranda perfect for enjoying cold drinks while lounging. We concluded our day with a sundowner along the Luwi River, admiring the splendid sunset.
The next morning, we rose early to avoid the heat on our 14-kilometre trek, which we accomplished in a mere 3.5 hours! The sight of Kakuli upon our arrival was a pure relief for our weary legs. To our surprise, Lawrence, the Luwi manager, greeted us alongside Malama and the rest of the Kakuli team.
After the long hike, Kakuli felt like paradise! With chalets facing the river, we revelled in privacy, enjoying the pleasant breeze from the water. Kakuli strikes a perfect balance of adventure and luxury. One of my favourite experiences at all the Time+Tide camps were the 11AM brunches. So tasty!
It was a wonderful way to rejoice in the day, savouring food while taking in magnificent views. This leisurely brunch provided us with the chance to unwind and rejuvenate before diving into the evening game activities.
The following day took us to Lion Camp in northern South Luangwa. On our way, we had the opportunity to visit Time +Tide Mchenja for a site inspection, completing our tour of all the Time +Tide Bush Camps (we proudly consider ourselves Time+Tide experts!).
Lion Camp boasted a beautiful location overlooking a lagoon teeming with wildlife. Dotti and her welcoming team greeted us, and as we settled in, we marvelled at the resident elephants meandering by. The spacious lounge area of Lion Camp radiated a cosy charm, complemented by artistic decor that captured the park’s allure.
Before we realised it, morning had arrived, and we ventured into the park one last time before being transferred to Kaingo Camp by Shenton Safaris. We arrived just in time for a sumptuous brunch—a feast indeed!
After a leisurely meal and some exploration of the site, we made our way to Mwamba Bush Camp for our final night. Mwamba was a true gem, nestled on open plains near a waterhole that was perfect for wildlife viewing. Our experience there was extraordinary! We spent time at the hides, chased sunsets, and enjoyed sundowners from the sleepout deck, feeling as though we were perched in a magical treehouse. And yes, another leopard indeed.
The panoramic view of the plains as dusk rolled in created an unforgettable memory. Sharing dinner with fellow guests highlighted how travel fosters meaningful connections, offering valuable perspectives on life.
Alas, our adventure drew to a close as we packed our safari vehicle the following morning. As the saying goes, “Home is best.” We buckled ourselves in and set our sights on Lilongwe, our hearts brimming with cherished memories from this incredible journey!
