Recently refurbished and reopened in 2018, Lion Camp is among the more luxurious lodges in South Luangwa. With a heavy influence from lodges in South Africa, you can expect great service, great food and great guiding with the opulence of a boutique hotel in the bush.
There are 10 rooms along the floodplain. The lodge is set on a raised wooden platform with walkways to the rooms ensuring wildlife can walk freely off the plain and under your room! Visually stunning, the lodge delivers on luxury in a game rich area of the park.
Hidden luxury
Lion Camp has recently undergone a major refurbishment, which means the ‘bush technology’ is tip-top. Including, an advanced cooling system in the bed (needed in the hotter months) the latest vehicles, telescopes, kitchens and bathrooms.
This is the ultimate in comfort deep within the bush. Lion Camp go the extra mile, from high-end toiletries in the rooms to a glass of bubbly with breakfast, it is a decadent treat in a place you least expect it.
The lodge has a very South African feel, likely from the new management couple, with meal times differing slightly from the norm and lots of delicious food.
Romance
Safari can be the ultimate holiday for those on a honeymoon or wedding anniversary or even to propose! But, with joint activities and communal meals, finding moments away together can be a little harder to find. At Lion Camp, however, all dining is done privately and can even be set up on your own, private, deck, numbers are very limited in vehicles and the communal areas are set up to have several nooks you can hide away in.
Then, of course, there is the room itself – almost open plan. You can share the huge open showers, sit together on your observation deck or enjoy the complimentary bottle of port in your room as a pleasant nightcap.
Sightings
This area of South Luangwa is one of the busiest wildlife areas in the park, which is great news for guests! Not that you have to leave the lodge to see the animals. Lion Camp overlooks a floodplain with a permanent waterhole, there are lots of plains game in the area from frequent elephant sightings to giraffes, antelopes and a huge number of birds.
Last time we were there both Mike and Chloe saw lions on the way in. With several resident lion prides in the area, it’s a hotbed of cat activity; new males are claiming their territory and old ones are being chased away to the north of the park. It’s an exciting time to visit!

Wonderful location and amazing wildlife
We recently spent five days at glorious Lion Camp . Chic accommodation , fabulous food and wine and wonderful location overlooking a watering hole and the wafwah stretching into the distance occupied constantly by a huge variety of wildlife . Vicky and Wayne manage this very special place with dedication to the highest standards , along with a hugely warm welcome . Brilliant guides ensure you see as much game as possible and have unbelievable skills and knowledge . We had a truly memorable stay.

Action While You Eat!
Our first visit to Lion Camp and hopefully not the last. This recently remodeled camp sits on the banks of an oxbow lagoon where elephants, antelope, baboons and the occasional predator come to drink throughout the day. You can sit in your room or in the main area of camp and watch the animals without even going on a game drive. But when you do go on game drive you will have some very productive territory to explore along the banks of the Luangwa River – without running into very many other vehicles! Great food and excellent service at the camp too.

“NEW” LION CAMP
Many Congratulations to the “NEW” Lion Camp !!!
We’ve been visiting Lion Camp every year since 2013 and in some years twice in a year.. In all we’ve been there about 7 to 8 times. On every trip we made there it was always a memorable one. When we visited the “OLD” Lion Camp, we thought, that’s it, it cannot be done any better, but, low and behold, the “NEW” Lion Camp has turned out to be marvelous.. All the best words in the dictionary cannot describe the status !!

I can only echo the positive reviews, Lion Camp is fabulous . Vicky, Wayne and all of their staff really do the most amazing job. The accommodation, food and service are spot on. The views from the rooms and dining areas are ever-changing with the visiting animals. Game drives were exceptional, thank you Thomas and “Hawkeye”. We always felt safe and secure on walks, drives and in camp even though we got close up to many animals. Highly recommended.
