Tafika Tours

Tafika Camp, run by Remote Africa Safaris, is in the very north of South Luangwa. Just outside the park boundary, we canoed across the river to reach camp. Tafika is family owned and run, you can often find yourself being hosted by John and Carol themselves, recalling tales of life in the bush.

They have spacious and luxurious bush chalets overlooking a bend on the river as well as hides at the lodge so you can catch the action without leaving the lodge! Here you can enjoy a variety of game drives and walks with one of the oldest and most experienced guides in the valley!

Exceptional member of staff: Moffat, Guide: One of the best trail guides we had – took on board my love for insects and took me scorpian searching!

-Mike Varndell, Managing Founder, visited in July 2018

Hides

The wildlife viewing at Tafika begins from the lodge! With 2 hides, one facing the river to look for hippos and one facing a waterhole at the back. With frequent visitors at the waterhole including elephant herds and some resident ground hornbill, it’s a great spot to spend a few hours after lunch perfecting your photography and making sure you miss none of the action!

The hippo hide has great views across the river and whilst here we heard lots of action, not only from the hippos and crocs but from some roaring lions and laughing hyenas! We are huge fans of a photography hide for those peaceful (ish-depending on who visits!) moments between drives and for some great close up photography. It is also the perfect place for birding.

Family community

At Tafika, the emphasis is the family community. Here, you can be guided by one of the first black guides in the valley, Isaac – he is 72 and still rocking a game drive. Tafika has a host of incredible guides from walking experts to photographic geniuses, there is someone to cater for any guest.

You will often dine with the owners, Carol and John, who will tell you some incredible tales of their life in the bush and tell you about some of the incredible work they do with the local community.

Remoteness

Remote African Safaris do exactly what they say on the tin! All three of the camps are completely off the beaten track. Due to limited game drive cross over with other camps, you feel as though you are the only people in the park. There are amazing things to see including incredible saltpans up north, good dog sightings and huge flocks of crowned cranes.

Even to get to the camp is an adventure; you take a game drive to the north of the park, cross a river by canoe, followed by another quick ride to the camp! All of which leaves you feeling like you are a trepid explorer, discovering an unexplored paradise.

  • Rustic but Classy spot in the bush!!

We had the pleasure of spending a few nights at Tafika, and loved every minute of it. The rooms were rustic but classy, still giving you that feeling you are in the bush but done in a very classy way. The location is perfect with spectacular views, the food was incredible, the wildlife was spectacular and the guides were brilliant (especially Moffat and Macuba). Loved every minute and hope to get back soon. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

  • Tafika is terrific!

This was our first safari so we didn’t really know what to expect, but we had great hopes that we had chosen good camps. We did! All three were wonderful, but Tafika was is the one we think about the most now that we are home and missing Africa terribly. We were fortunate to be able to spend some time with the owners, Carol and John and Bryan. They made us feel very welcome as did Heather who is excellent at hospitality. Rona does an amazing job overseeing the preparation of the good food served there. Our guides were excellent. We loved our rondavel and its tree frogs.

  • Incredible experience

We enjoyed 2 days of Game drives at Tafika before heading off for 4 days walking on the other side of the river and staying at Crocodile Camp and Chikoko. Everything about our stay was wonderful; the rooms and general camp setup at Tafika looks and feels rustic but the attention to detail is superb and we were very well looked after indeed. The staff go out of their way to make you feel completely at home. The food and drinks are incredible – gourmet dining that is superfresh and healthy. Our game drives were similarly first class.
