Kaingo is the main camp owned by Shenton Safaris. A luxury lodge based in the middle of the bush, in the quieter northern sector of South Luangwa, it is a photographer’s dream. Shenton excels itself with their range of unique hides and sleep out spots. Encouraging you to get up close and personal they have a range of nooks they can take you to where you can watch the wildlife uninterrupted and close enough to leave the zoom lens in the bag!

They also have some of the best guides in the valley. As we always say the guide can make or break a trip – a good one will always make you want to come back for more! Their ability to spot the animals is incredible but what makes the experience outstanding is their stories of each individual animal, from the known lion prides to individual leopards.

Shenton just get it right from the food, the ambience, the comfortable rooms and the incredible activities. We always leave wanting to return.

Hippo hide/sleep outs

Kaingo is well known for its focus on photography; from expert guides, who can help you with your camera, to the top-quality hides, found around the camp. Not to mention, the floating moveable Carmine bee eater hides and the platform elephant hides.

The real star for me is the hippo hides; down on the river edge, it gets you right up in the action. You are so close that if the hippos are startled and splash into the water you will get wet! Here you can watch them interacting, observe turf wars and see babies feeding. You won’t even need a zoom lens to get a great shot (although great for close up detail).

Guides

The guides here are amongst the best in the valley. They know the names, territories and history of almost every animal in the area (of course the excitement comes when someone new enters the fold). They can tell you of lost battles, current enemies and impending motherhoods!

They also know a huge amount about photography and will, therefore, position the vehicles for the best shot, help with camera settings and find you the perfect backdrop.

Communal dining provides a great opportunity for them to share stories of life in the bush and help you make sense of the sightings you saw that day, and generally are very entertaining and great company.

Food and hosts

Whilst food may not be your first concern in the bush, you’re on holiday and a good meal is always appreciated. Shenton has an incredible chef who creates the menu around the produce grown on their plot, just outside the park.

We can honestly say there wasn’t anything they served that we didn’t devour. From tempting afternoon teas to the indulgent three-course dinners. It’s a surprise the hosts stay in such great shape, surrounded by all this delicious temptation!

  • Beyond Stunning

We sincerely want to convey in this review how incredibly lucky and happy we are that we got to experience Kaingo Camp. I do believe this can be ticked under the once in a lifetime experience!
The game viewing was excellent. We had multiple, multiple leopard, lion, wild dog, hyena, hippo, zebra, giraffe and elephant sightings. We had a truly gifted and professional guide in Shayne. Shayne and Davis made the drives interesting and fun.
    The staff were absolutely outstanding.

  • Above all expectations in Zambia

after a nice week in Kafue we came to the real place: south Luangwa and not in any lodge but Kaingo. We are coming every two year in Africa on safari so we know what to expect. Kaingo is the place: wonderful site, wonderful chalets, wonderful and helpful team and of course a GUIDE Shane that makes our week a paradise. Never have we seen such scenery: lions feeding on hippo, leopard hunting day and night.

  • Wonderful

Four of us stayed for 3 nights at this camp recently. Just superb. We had no idea that Zambia had such hidden jewels like Shenton Camps until Jono, our travel agent from Encompass Africa pointed us in this direction. Gerard and his team work incredibly hard to make sure your stay is a memorable one. And with a guide like Hendrix you cant go wrong. He showed us, leopards, lions, wild dogs etc etc etc. Everything works seamlessly from pick up at Mfuwe airport to drop off. Also the food is amazing. We’ll be back.

  • Beyond amazing…

What an amazing experience! From the perfectly timed grating by our guide Sly at the Mfuwe airport, to the transit to the lodge (which doubled as a game drive and lunch stop), Kaingo set the bar very high. The camp manager (Eve) and everyone else we came in contact with set a wonderful standard for attentive and friendly service. The accommodations were outstanding, but the game sightings were even better. Kudos to Sly and all of the other guides for their expertise and willingness to share the fascinating area of South Luangua. We will never forget the amazing time we had at Kaingo, and we will most definitely return.
