Tucked away just beyond the border of Hwange National Park, Sable Valley Lodge offers a remarkable safari retreat surrounded by wild beauty. Formerly known as Sable Sands, this charming lodge sits on the edge of the Dete Vlei – a seasonal watercourse teeming with wildlife. Located just 180 km from Victoria Falls, it’s a brilliant base for travellers seeking both adventure and serenity. Now part of the Amalinda Safari Collection, the lodge carries a royal stamp of approval – having once welcomed Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Guests are drawn here not just by its heritage, but by its untouched wilderness and timeless charm.

Exceptional Location

The lodge lies along a 7-kilometre stretch of private concession on the Dete Vlei, where waterholes draw in herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, and antelope. Wildlife roams freely between this area and the nearby national park, with no barriers disrupting their natural paths. Despite being just outside the park’s formal boundary, the wildlife experience is as authentic and immersive as within. From the main lodge, guests can watch animals gather at the waterhole, sometimes catching a glimpse of predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. Birdwatchers are in for a treat too, with more than 400 bird species recorded in the area.

Unique Activities

Whether it’s a walking safari led by expert guides or a quiet afternoon in the underground photographic hide, Sable Valley offers a rich variety of experiences. Guests can enjoy game drives across the lodge’s diverse terrain, from open plains to shady woodlands. A treetop platform offers a breathtaking vantage point for those who prefer to sit back and observe in comfort. This destination also supports conservation through partnerships with anti-poaching units and the Forestry Commission of Zimbabwe. With private access to prime wildlife territory, the safari possibilities here are both thrilling and deeply personal.

Accommodation

The lodge consists of eleven rustic yet elegant chalets, designed for comfort while blending beautifully with the forest surrounds. Each chalet comes with an en-suite bathroom and private veranda, allowing guests to unwind while taking in the sights and sounds of the bush. Options include twin, double, and family layouts, making it suitable for couples or small groups. A central pool area adds to the laid-back atmosphere, perfect for cooling off between excursions. For a more secluded experience, the forest treehouse offers a magical hideaway among the branches.

  • Wow! What a place…

Wow! The service offered at Sable Valley makes it a standout place. Thank you so much to all the team at Sable for your incredible hospitality! We stayed for 3 nights to celebrate my birthday, and were welcomed with fabulous service. Travelling from the UK, we were greeted with an extra special booking in the room the Queen stayed in, in 1991 too. Keith and the team made it weekend to remember! The Boma dinner was fun and exciting too, and made me feel super special with a fab cake brought out to share with everyone! Thank you☺️”

  • Lodge with royal past

“After a 10-day mobile tent safari in Botswana and a short stay at Victoria Falls, Sable Valley Lodge was our first “real” lodge. It was great!!! Keith and all his staff were so wonderful. The food just delicious. There are several cabins (in Nos. 1 and 2 Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip stayed in 1991) , a swimming pool, lounge area with Wi-Fi and the opportunity to observe animals up close. Despite the rainy season and the tall grass we have seen many animals (wild dogs hunting, lions, countless elephants and buffalo). Thanks Rodwell!!! Definitely a recommendation!!!”.

  • Fabulous place – book now!

“This was our first trip to Zim, and we stayed at Sable and Amalinda. Both are fantastic in different ways. In Sable, we asked for the Queen’s room (complete with wonderful avocado coloured fittings) and loved every minute. The communal area if large and beautiful (particularly the light fittings) and we could literally watch wild dogs hunting in the vlei as we had breakfast. Rodwell was an excellent guide and managed to pull off the ‘three cat day’ (leopard, cheetah and lion), as well as find us lots of carmine bee eaters and sable antelope – plus a herd of about 600 buffalo and plenty of elephant. Raz, Keith and all the staff were extremely friendly and passionate about what they do, and the food was really excellent.”
