Track and Trail River Camp is a wonderful lodge owned and run by the famous Luangwa photographer Peter Geraerdts. Set by the busier but game rich Mfuwe sector the camp is often full of animals and game drives are rich with sightings. The spacious and luxury chalets offer a haven within the wilderness and Peter is often around for hints and tips on how to capture the beautiful surrounding scenes.

Photography

Peter Geraerdts who owns and runs Track and Trail is a famed wildlife photographer and expert guide. At hand around the lodge for photo tips all the guides are also well versed in the art of taking a magical snap! The guiding here is great and photographic opportunities are often. Should you wish to enhance your skills further, Peter runs several workshops you can take part in and learn his tricks of the trade.

Good rooms

The rooms here are spacious and beautiful. Particularly good for those who are a little apprehensive of a tent, here you can enjoy four solid walls, mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms, fans and some have a private balcony! They either face the river or the back of the property and are set on elevated platforms. They are perfectly secluded from each other and offer uninterrupted wildlife sightings. Ideal for those who don’t wish to have a siesta in the midday heat and want to continue their game viewing!

Game viewing

Track and Trail is on the banks of the Luangwa River, just outside the park. However, that doesn’t stop the animals! The park is unfenced so you will often find lots of antelope, elephants, giraffe, hippo and crocs in the area as well as a wealth of birds. Based next to the Mfuwe sector of the park, you will have game drives in this animal rich area. Keep an eye out for the famous lions; Ginger and Garlic who are very pale and of course Luangwa’s famous high leopard population

  • Amazing stay

I contacted Track and Trail due to their special focus on photography. Peter and Kirsten kindly set up a 3 week itinerary, only a portion of which was with them. Peter was our guide for the last 8 days of the trip, and showed impressive knowledge about the wildlife of the South Luangwa. The grounds of Track and Trail are impressive, with an elevated pool and sunken hide near wetland they have created. The rooms are quite nice; we had hippos and elephants outside our rooms at night.

  • Just perfect!

I enjoyed fantastic days at Track and Trail and felt warmly welcomed from the first minute.
The hospitality was superb, the chalets are really spacious, comfortable, tastefully decorated and with a beautiful view facing South Luangwa River. The food was deliciously prepared and just top class!

  • Gamedrive 2.0 at Track & Trail River Camp

I went on a 5-day photoshoot twith Track and Trail River Camp owner Peter Gereardts. I have done many gamedrives before, but this what I call Gamedrive 2.0. Peter is specialized in private photographic safaris and knows how to shoot wildlife, birds and mammals. Peter set up my camera for action shooting the first day (Canon: use of af-on) and on we went. The big advantage is that Peter has the look of a photographer. Not only is het a good spotter, he also has a keen eye on lighting and position, something you don’t come across much with regular gamedrives.
