The Mushroom Farm Tours
Rates/Bookings

In the hills of northern Malawi, bask in the natural surroundings of Livingstonia. The Mushroom Farm boasts exceptional views over the landscape and Lake Malawi beyond. Enjoy a digital detox and enjoy the solitude on birding walks, hikes, waterfall visits, and relaxing on the deck with a good book and the sounds of nature around you.

Unbelievable views

Mushroom Lodge’s major selling point is its position high up on a cliff overlooking Livingstonia beach of Lake Malawi. The main lodge and most rooms boast this exceptional view that will take your breath away every morning you wake up in this natural haven. Immerse yourself in the landscape before you on walking trails and reach view points for that incredible snapshot.

Fabulous hiking trails

Immerse yourself in the natural environment that surrounds the lodge on one of their many walking trails, head to Chombe Plateau for a 5-6hr day hike and see 360-degree views of Lake Malawi, Nyika National Park, and the surrounding mountain ranges of Tanzania. Pay a visit to Manchewe Falls for a 2-6hr trip to see the 300ft waterfall and cave beneath, hop into the refreshing pools for a cool down! Or hike to the historic Livingstonia town through local villages to see the Scottish missionary Presbyterian church built in the late 19th century. You can even head out to Nyika Plateau for a 3 day trek through coffee plantations, forests and through the rolling hills and beautiful plains of the plateau. You’ll hike through streams and walk amongst the flora and fauna that’s made Nyika Plateau a marvel of Malawi.

Sustainability

The lodge is committed to operating sustainably and in tune with the environment. To reduce their ecological impact, the lodge is completely power by solar, all the toilets are waterless compost loos with no septic tank, after 7 months the waste breaks down into an odourless organic and rich fertiliser for the fruit trees, flowers and coffee plants. The lodge also has permaculture garden which supplies much of their produce to the kitchen, homegrown organic veggies, as well as fresh eggs from their chickens. Their pigs and chickens create fertiliser for the permaculture garden and are fed from the garden and kitchen scraps, creating a full closed loop system!

  • Amazing stay at a spectacular destination

This is a magical place. Stunning views, delicious food, great vibes. We stayed in the Cliffside Cabin and the Cob House – both are fantastic rooms with private spaces to enjoy the incredible sunrises. The Cob House open bathroom is a particular highlight – as well as the outdoor bathtub experience! Throughout the lodge there are so many little spaces to hang out in or explore. We didn’t do even half the activities on offer – all the more to experience on the next visit! The whole team is amazing and the owners are the friendliest and most accommodating you’ll ever meet – no request is too small or too big, from drawing a map to helping butterflies. It’s such a great place to disconnect, hike, write, read, play, bask in nature, and unwind. We’ll be back!!

  • Fabulous place

Definitely one of the best places I’ve stayed at in five months of traveling southern Africa. So relaxing! I was planning to stay three nights and stayed six. Food and coffee are amazing and the views are stunning. Lots of room to sit and relax and read a book from their library or play a board game. Highly recommend checking out Mushroom Farm!

  • A beautiful time in nature

I had a lovely two-night stay here in February 2023. The place is spectacularly perched on the edge of a cliff affording exceptional views. The food was vegetarian and excellent and the staff were very good too. Well-managed and environmentally friendly. What’s not to love?
