Mkulumadzi is one of only 2 lodges in Majete, Malawi’s first big 5 park. Majete is a stunning wilderness area with thick bush and the lower Shire River, which descends into rapids in front of the lodge. Here you can enjoy everything from bush walks and drives to boating on the river or in the dam. Although the density of wildlife here isn’t high, the variety of species is. You can spot some really unusual antelope and birds, and of course you have the chance to see the big 5.
“Mkulumadzi is a beautiful lodge in an idyllic wilderness destination. Arriving over the swinging footbridge to get to the lodge was exciting and different – very memorable. The rooms are spacious and extremely comfortable with incredible views from every angle. The food was delicious and the staff were so friendly and welcoming, we were made to feel like family when staying here.”

“Mkulumadzi is exceptional in every way, from the wonderfully prepared meals, to the superb guiding and staff to the incredibly designed chalets. We had an outstanding safari experience while visiting in March of 2019, and I got to scratch my final big 5 off my list – RHINO!”

Majete is the first of Malawi’s National Parks that African Parks took over and re-introduced the Big 5 to. Although populations are not very high yet, there have been regular sightings of each. There is so much to enjoy when on a game-drive, gorgeous landscapes, stunning views over the river and there is no shortage of antelope, especially Nyala & Waterbuck. Knowing that the big 5 are out there is always exciting and you will be on the edge of your seat on the drives hoping to see one of the beautiful animals – it’s a very special place.
The rooms at Mkulumadzi are a rustic luxury, spacious and tasteful with gorgeous views. Each bedroom is very open, so you feel at one with the wild, and whether you are sitting on the balcony, enjoying a relaxing bath or cooling off in the outdoor shower, the views from every angle are breath-taking. Each room is also equipped with a tea and coffee station and a fridge, so for those early morning wake up calls you can enjoy your first cup of tea or coffee in the comfort of your own little haven. Want a special treat? Spend a night out in the open air with someone special on the Mkulumadzi raised star-deck and fall asleep beneath a blanket of stars. Up there you will find everything you need for a comfortable night, double bed with cotton linen, bedside tables, a canopy mosquito net, lanterns and seating. It is a truly unforgettable experience.
To get to the lodge itself there is a small (exciting) obstacle to pass…’The Swinging Bridge’. We say swinging, it is of course perfectly safe and barely moves when you walk across, but you get a slight thrill when crossing to get to the next vehicle to take you to the lodge steps. The rapids are right under your feet as you head across the Mkulumadzi River – it is quite spectacular and very memorable. As this is the only way back into the park for your drives, you will need to cross over a few times if staying at Mkulumadzi for a few nights. For those that are slightly less inclined by this, your guide is there to assist, and, will live up to his name.
