Matemwe Lodge Tours

A 60-minute drive from Stone Town and a 30-minute boat ride away from Mnemba Island, Matemwe is another great escape. With 12 chalets, each with their own private sea facing veranda complete with a hammock and sofa you can really get that exclusive tropical island experience. They don’t let that captivating Indian ocean go to waste either. They offer a variety of aquatic activities including snorkelling, kayaking and sailing; and if you need some R and R (total rest and relaxation) after all that exercise, you can pamper yourself at the Spa. All in all, the Matemwe experience is a quieter one so it’s a great place to stay and make trips to other places but if you love the quiet, they will give you a breathtaking experience of it.

Help thy Neighbour

One of the things that definitely stood out for me and warmed my heart was how they bring the community into their business. Currently, they have a program running called Tiwende Bahrain, where they take children from the community and host them for 3 nights at the lodge; giving them the guest experience. They also try to create and encourage a zeal for tourism and further to this annually, they recruit trainees from the village and train them in the different departments. As if that’s not enough, their helping hands also reach out to the environment, where they are heavily involved in conservation which includes helping sea turtles that are at risk. Theirs is a full heart that pours out to not only their guests but everyone and everything around them.

A stunning retreat

That island vibe spills over to all the rooms which are beautifully decorated with carved wood furniture and colourful drapes. Those with mezzanines have the option of sleeping upstairs or downstairs. The rooms also all have a stunning view of the ocean and since the beach is less crowded, it’s perfect for a cosy stroll. It’s the ideal place for a getaway or honeymoon.

Activities at low and high tide

Whether the tide is high or low, they make sure you have something to do. At low tide you can walk on swim shoes to the reef and high tide you can swim and snorkel. Being built right opposite Mnemba Island you can take a trip there and swim with dolphins. The marine life in general is in abundance so no matter what time you decide to swim, you will have a wonderful experience.

  • The experience of a lifetime!

The Matemwe Lodge is the pinnacle of rustic luxury in the breathtaking location of north eastern Zanzibar. A trip to the lodge will be a highlight of your trip with wonderful staff, food and outstanding experiences. The snorkeling and water sports are not to be missed! I had the great fortune of swimming with dolphins. My room was breathtaking (both in views, the wonderful eco-design sensibilities of Asilia and the warm-hearted and delightful staff). I recommend this lodge to everyone.
