Latitude 13 is a stylish boutique hotel in the centre of Lilongwe, set in a lush green garden with a huge swimming pool. There is a beautiful spa and the whole hotel is filled with modern art made from recyclable material such as washed up glass and driftwood made by a women’s charity on the island of Likoma. This is Lilongwe’s most upmarket hotel and the restaurant is very popular with the city’s ‘movers and shakers’, we recommend popping in for a cocktail or two and dinner whilst here.
“The atmosphere here is amazing, the decorations are beautiful and the luxury spa is dreamy. We always pop along for a glass of wine or dinner when in Lilongwe”
– Mike April 2019
The hotel has recently opened a new boutique spa. Expert masseuse’s are on hand to provide the utmost in relaxation, they also offer nail treatments. Let the team take away any daily stresses and ease out any tension using locally sourced products such as the nutrient rich homegrown Moringa oil. The spa also has a high tech gym for those that like to stay active on holiday and a large pool, which you can take a dip in to cool off after a good sweat session in the gym!
The hotel has some incredible pieces throughout which embodies their passion for the communities they are part of. The centrepieces of each space and textiles in the bedrooms are all made from recycled furniture and recycled local materials from emerging African artists. Most of it is made in a workshop on Likoma Island that employs local women and teaches them how to create the beautiful pieces in order to make an income from washed up materials. If by the end of your trip you have run out of conversation with your travel buddies the walls here will spark many a hot topic!
Much like the rest of the main spaces in the hotel, the rooms are nothing short of artworks themselves. The modern clean airy spaces have their own beautiful décor and textiles from Likoma and really make you question whether you are in the heart of Malawi or a boutique hotel in the Maldives. The spaces are comfortable, have huge beds, modern walk-in showers or stand-alone bathtubs and have air-con for those hotter months. It is perfect for those who want to end their Malawi adventure on a little luxury.
