Nestling on the shore of Indian Ocean, shaded by thatched roofs made from sun-dried coconut palm leaves is a small privately owned boutique hotel, Fundu Lagoon. This unique barefoot luxury is only accessible by boat or plane from Zanzibar. The hotel features eighteen tented safari style bungalows perched on the beach and on the hillside all with breath-taking views from the Indian Ocean. Voted Best Marine Safari Property in Africa, Fundu Lagoon has one of the best diving in the world. Remote and peaceful, this is the ultimate paradise for solo travellers, groups, honeymooners, couples, families, and corporate retreats.

Best Marine Safari Property in Africa

Surrounded by the Indian Ocean you will find Pemba Island which boasts one of the best diving sites in the world. There are shallow coral lagoons with beautiful depths that support a wide range of marine life. Voted PADI 5-Star Resort in Africa, Fundu Lagoon is committed to sharing a safe and exciting diving experience. Fundu Lagoon Dive 710 has a well experienced team with vast knowledge about the area. You can as well take a short boat trip into the protected marine area just to admire the pristine coral gardens nearby Misali Island.

Top of the class accommodation

Fundu Lagoon’s eighteen rooms are made up of canvas tents nestled under makuti thatch roofs raised on wooden decks. Their standard bungalows enjoy privacy, panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and a cooling sea breeze; and shaded by the tropical trees and shrubs are the spacious beachfront rooms with direct access to the beach, a couple of sun loungers and a plunge pool.

Excellent food selection

There is always something special about gazing out over the beautiful Indian Ocean while enjoying the freshly picked fruits and vegetables from the nearby villages, and fresh fish from the surrounding waters. Every week they have a beach BBQ with a bonfire under the stars as well as the Swahili-themed dinner on the jetty with an elegant atmosphere.

  • Solo travelers welcome!

First-class resort on a still yet “undiscovered” island off Zanzibar/Tanzania. Your flight will drop off passengers on Zanzibar before taking you to Pemba Island. A long, bumpy ride to the harbor before you are picked up by the Resorts motorboat and taken on a 15-minute ride across the bay to the jetty at Fundu where you are met with a welcoming smile from the managers and the most welcome cool drink and cold facecloth ever!

If you are self-drive, you don’t want to take the road to the resort, but I believe you can make arrangements at the harbor to park your vehicle there (for a fee). Being a solo traveler can make you stand out, but at this beautiful place, you feel very much at home.

  • The highlight of our honeymoon

Fundu Lagoon was the final stop of our honeymoon and we certainly finished on a high! We were very kindly upgraded to a beach suite room, which really did add a special touch to our stay. The hotel is spotless and each member of staff so kind and accommodating. The surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful and sipping a margarita on the jetty as the sunset, before dinner on the beach, was heaven!
