Malawi has introduced updated immigration regulations that affect visa requirements for many international travellers. With changes now in effect from early January 2026, following amendments published in the Malawi Government Gazette, it’s more important than ever to understand what this means for your travel plans.
As a destination management company based in the region, we work closely with partners and authorities to stay across regulatory updates that impact travel to Malawi.

Under the Immigration Amendment Regulations published in early January 2026, Malawi revised the list of nationalities exempt from visa requirements. The updated framework establishes that a visa is required for entry into Malawi unless a traveller’s nationality or passport category is specifically exempt under the regulations.
The revised policy is based on reciprocity, meaning visa exemptions apply primarily to countries that do not require visas from Malawian citizens, as well as certain regional and institutional categories travelling on official business.
These exemptions apply to holders of ordinary passports travelling for standard entry purposes:
Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Dominica, Ecuador, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Haiti, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kiribati, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vanuatu.
Visa exemptions also apply to specific categories of travellers, subject to reciprocity and official travel status:
For travellers whose nationality or passport category does not appear in the exemption lists above, a visa must be obtained to travel to Malawi. This includes travellers from Europe, North America and several Asia-Pacific countries that were previously visa-exempt under earlier policies.
Malawi offers an electronic visa application system for travellers who wish to apply in advance, along with an online tool to check whether a visa is required based on nationality. For many travellers, obtaining a visa on arrival remains the most straightforward option.
Visas on arrival are currently available for eligible travellers at designated ports of entry.
At present:
Travellers obtaining a visa on arrival should carry standard supporting documentation, including proof of accommodation, onward or return travel and evidence of sufficient funds. Immigration officials may request additional documentation at their discretion.

For travellers who require a visa, the current fee structure published by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services is as follows:
Visa fees are subject to change in accordance with official government guidance.
While Malawi’s updated visa framework requires many travellers to plan ahead, entry procedures remain straightforward when supported by accurate information and early preparation.
Travellers and travel partners are encouraged to verify visa requirements based on nationality and passport type at the earliest stage of planning and to allow flexibility where entry procedures may evolve during implementation.
At Crafted Africa, we continue to monitor regulatory developments closely and support our guests and partners with clear, up to date guidance to ensure smooth and confident arrivals into our beautiful country, Malawi.
