Why We Love John’s Camp
Key Features

For travellers seeking a truly wild and off-grid safari, John’s Camp offers an intimate experience that captures the spirit of old Africa. With only a handful of guests hosted at any one time, this charming bush camp delivers a peaceful retreat along the banks of the Zambezi. Ideal for seasoned safari enthusiasts and nature lovers, it’s the kind of place where the wilderness comes first and the connection with nature feels deeply personal.

Mike and Lotte visited the camp and thoroughly enjoyed their stay it’s definitely a place worth experiencing.

Exceptional Location

Located on the eastern edge of Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park, where the Sapi River flows into the mighty Zambezi, John’s Camp is perfectly placed for privacy and wildlife immersion. The area is remote and uncrowded, offering a true escape from modern distractions. With no mobile reception and limited power, it’s the perfect setting for switching off and tuning in to nature.

Unique Activities

Days are filled with traditional safari experiences, led by expert guides who know the area intimately. Guests can explore by vehicle, on foot, or in canoes, tracking everything from elephants to the elusive painted wolf. Birders will find the area especially rewarding, while riverbank sundowners add a magical close to each adventurous day. The camp’s private setting also allows for flexible itineraries and a slower pace.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in simple yet comfortable Meru-style tents, each with an en-suite bathroom and open-air shower. While there’s no electricity in the tents, solar lamps and paraffin lanterns add to the campfire ambience. A central dining and lounge area includes a charging station for devices. Though rustic, the camp offers hearty meals, warm hospitality, and a welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere that many find irresistible.

  • I loved every minute at John’s Camp

“My yearly “self discovery” trip took my to John’s Camp in May for 5 nights. I really had an amazing stay. Tawanda and his team are the most wonderful people and made me love every minute. The camp is remote and close to nature. Accommodation and food are excellent. The sleepout on the stardeck is a must do. Mark is a very knowledgeable guide and we had outstanding sightings of wild dogs and lions. He took me on a walking safari for three hours, which I enjoyed a lot.” Date of stay: May 2025

  • Amazing stay!

“Outstanding in every way! 6 friends / couples travelling together from Australia to Africa for the first time for a special birthday. After spending time in 2 different areas of Hwange national Park we arrived at Mana Pools. The view is just breathtaking! I could have just sat all day and watched the hippos and elephants out on the flood plain in front of us all day! The tents were very comfortable, the only issue we had was coming from a king bed it was bit more squishy then we were used to haha . Mark our guide was extremely knowledgeable and really went out of his way to try to track some Lions when he saw some tracks.” Date of stay: May 2025

  • 3 nights in total immersion with nature

“We stayed 3 nights at John’s camp and everything was perfect! The kindness of All the staff and the way they take care of us touched us a lot. At the camp, we live in the middle of nature and the scenery is guaranteed. The tents are comfortable. The dry and shower are outdoors (tarpaulins but its roof) there is no electrical outlet in the tent but a charging station in the common departure. It didn’t bother us. The meals were all prepared with attention and delicious.” Date of stay: June 2025
