Chilo Gorge is a luxury lodge within the edges of the Gonarezhou National Park, set in the deep wilderness of Zimbabwe it is a great place to relax in the wilderness hiking the area, seeing the wildlife but also to learn about the unique landscape and it is a great area to experience the community and learn about the culture of the Zimbabweans in the area. The lodge is perched on one of the cliff tops and so offers the most incredible views a must for anyone who wants to feel on top of the world.
Location
As the name suggests the beautiful lodge looks over the Gorge below, set atop one of the cliffs of the park. The unusual red sandstone Chilojo cliffs make for an incredible backdrop to this unique area of wilderness. You can often spot large herds of elephant and buffalo drinking from the river below and of course there are a large number of predators including lion, cheetah and wild dog which make it a magical place to explore.
Community
The lodge has many ties with the surrounding Shangaan villages and you can arrange to spend some time in the village of Mahenye. Here you can spend an afternoon exploring the area and visiting the school and community centre to learn more about the tribe. With a great respect for the local environment and community led conservation it is the core area the campfire concept was born. Guests are encouraged to interact with the colourful locals and it is a great time to interact with some of Africa’s most remote inhabitants
Activities
From the community visit above there is a vast variety of activities to partake in here from the normal game drives and walks to the more unusual excursions. You can visit the Chilio Cliffs, in the heart of the park the red sandstone cliffs and water pans offer great birding spots and it’s a great area to spot the mass herds of elephants and buffalo. You can visit the Chivalila Falls an active 2.5 km hiking trail to a viewpoint over the falls it is the perfect way to burn off those endless safari meals! Or head to the Sacred Sand Forest where the 3 rivers meet which supports a vast birdlife with over 450 species! A must for those with a more unusual checklist than simply the big 5!!

30 days on the edge of serenity
There are a few places on earth, that as individuals we consider special, that keep calling us back. To me Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge and the Gonarezhou National Park, are two of them. So much so, that since my first visit last year, I just had to come back and stay for as long as I could. Stay I did, for 30 days!! The second largest national park in Zimbabwe next to Hwange, this place is a gem, awaiting full discovery. The landscapes are varied and breathtakingly beautiful.

Beautiful views over the river.. tons of hippos
This property is based outside of Gonarezhou National Park…which only gets 20 visitors per DAY! So you won’t see another vehicle. The property is built above the river with beautiful views, the rooms are open so you get a lovely breeze. The managers are simply lovely and it is a wonderful combination of wildlife, community and landscapes. Don’t miss the Chilijo Cliffs

Amazing views, incredible excursions to the river and inside the National Park at Gonarezhou. The Chivilila Falls tour was a great way to watch the sunsets. The rooms are super awesome with an amazing outdoor area. I keep using the word amazing because it was truly memorable!
