Fam Trip: Blue Zebra

Fam Trip at Blue Zebra

Join us as we take you to Blue Zebra Island Lodge, where we enjoyed an overnight stay.

Six of us embarked on what was essentially a last-minute FAM trip. We set off from Lilongwe at approximately 9 a.m. and arrived at Whistlers Point just in time for the boat transfer. The excitement commenced when we stepped onto the boat, which had a roof to shield us from the summer sun. The boat transfer took a mere 20 minutes, and we reached the island in no time. We were warmly greeted by the Blue Zebra Staff, who offered us a cool, refreshing towel and a glass of hibiscus tea.

Once we all checked in, we regrouped at the pool bar. Half of us decided to head out and enjoy a kayak, while the remainder of the team stayed behind and enjoyed a much-needed refreshing glass of wine. Before we knew it, our bellies were rumbling! Lunch was beautifully created homemade quesadillas, all whilst overlooking the lake. We arranged to meet at 4:30 p.m. for a sunset cruise, so it was siestas or a lounge by the pool before our cruise.

The sunset cruise took us on a leisurely tour around the islands, where we savoured a delightful sundowner before returning to the lodge. The lake was exceptionally serene, and the sunset vistas were spectacular, providing the perfect setting to savour the conclusion of a splendid day.

The following morning, it was an early start as we had organised to hike the island, a must-do if you can visit Blue Zebra. The island is home to various small animals and birds, including the Angolan Pitta, which arrives in November and leaves around March/April when the breeding season is complete. It is also home to the African Fish-Eagle; their call is highly distinct, and seeing these exceptional birds when visiting the lake is always so exciting.

Blue Zebra is an eco-lodge that takes great pride in its proactive efforts to minimize the environmental impact of accommodation. We had the opportunity to observe these eco-friendly practices during our hike. The island boasts thriving wildlife, with numerous mature bird nests perched on trees throughout the area. These nests have existed for years, helping the wildlife flourish and multiply freely. After finishing the island walk, we had worked up a bit of a sweat, so it was only natural to head out for a kayak and snorkel. You can accomplish so much with an early rise! We then had a beautiful breakfast, checked out and were back on the boat by 11 a.m., ready to head back to the mainland and then home to Lilongwe.

We had a wonderful stay, it was fleeting but it gave us all an opportunity to unwind, enjoy some good food and relish in what this wonderful country has to offer us. Blue Zebra is in a great location, ideal for honeymooners, families, adventurers, or nature lovers. If you’re considering a trip to the lake and seeking peaceful, tranquil locations along with delicious food, this is the perfect destination to visit.
